Military studies

Recent decades have shown the world that armed conflict is an ongoing and varied issue, involving not only superpowers but also smaller states and non-state actors. The problems of war and organised violence are unlikely to diminish in the foreseeable future and the scope of conflict may well increase. At the core of understanding these issues is a nuanced understanding about the uses of force. SDSC boasts a team of academics who specialise in military operations; operational, military and war history; military culture; and intelligence studies, whose areas of focus comprise Australia, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Our research informs better understanding of how armed conflict has occurred in the past, and how the future will see continuities as well as revolutions in the nature of such conflicts. Our team provides the firm foundation in military operations, cultures, and history essential to navigating a potentially turbulent future.
