What will President Trump do for Australia and ANZUS?

Since the Second World War Australia’s defence strategy has been based on its relationship with the US, and the implied promise that in the event of Australia being attacked, the US would come to our rescue.

However, with the rise of China, the tension in the South China Sea and continuing conflict in the Middle East, things are changing. Australia is increasingly having to walk a fine line between its defence ally and its major trading partner.

What direction is ANZUS likely to take under President Trump?

Tom Switzer is a Senior Research Fellow at the US Studies Centre and a presenter on Radio National. Peter Dean is the Acting Head of the Strategic Studies Defence Centre at ANU and the author of the new book Australia’s American Alliance.
