Peter Rayner
Qualifications
BA, Hons – Indonesian political history (USYD); Diploma of Education (Syd College of Advanced Education); Post Graduate Diploma in Economics (UC)

Mr Rayner was an officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 35 years, having retired at the end of 2019. He was Australian Ambassador to Portugal from 2016-2019 and was concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Cabo Verde, Sao Tome & Principe and Guinea Bissau.
He had postings to Jakarta, Brasilia, Noumea and was Deputy Head of Mission in Dili from 2003-2005 and Deputy Head of Mission in Rome from 2009 - 2012. He was the Department’s Liaison Officer in Lisbon working on the East Timor transition in 1999-2000. In addition to three postings in the Asia-Pacific region, Mr Rayner spent another nine years in the Department in Canberra working on Asia-Pacific issues, including on Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Timor Leste, Japan and Pacific regional issues.
He speaks Portuguese, Indonesian, French, and some Italian.
