Tony Milner specializes on Southeast Asia and Australia-Asia relations. He is an historian who has engaged in interdisciplinary research with both anthropology and international relations. He was formerly Basham Professor of Asian History and Dean of Asian Studies at ANU. Today he is also Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and Visiting Professor at the University of Malaya. He is Co-Chair of the Australian Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific.
In the 1990s he was Director of the Australia Asia Perceptions Project of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He has served on two panels of the Australian Research Council and his other government committee appointments have been with the Foreign Affairs Council, the Australia Thailand Institute and the Australia Malaysia Institute.
His publications include The Malays (2008, 2011); The Invention of Politics in Colonial Malaya (1995, 2002); (co-author) Transforming Malaysia (2014); (co-author) Australia in Asia: Comparing Cultures (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000); (co-author) Our Place in the Asian Century: Southeast Asia as The Third Way (Melbourne: Asialink Commission, 2012), and (co-ed) Malaysian Perspectives on ASEAN Regionalism (2019).
He is an op-ed contributor the Australian Financial Review, The Australian and various Southeast Asian newspapers.
He is currently Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and Visiting Professor at the University of Malaya.
He has held various academic appointments at Monash University, Cornell University, University of Kent, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), National University of Singapore, National University of Malaysia, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Kyoto University, the Institute of Strategic and Defence Studies (Malaysia) and Humboldt University.
In 2017 he received an Honorary Doctorate in the Humanities from the University of Malaya.

Research interests
Tony Milner’s research has focussed, first, on the history of ideas and political culture in the ‘Malay World’ – and he has been particularly interested in the ways in which the historian can draw upon other disciplines (such as Anthropology and Literary Criticism) in researching such topics. Secondly, he has been concerned to analyse the role of values and cultural perceptions in Asian regional relations
