The nascent Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fought in urban areas during the country's war for independence in 1948 and has repeatedly found itself engaged in combat in densely populated built-up areas since. Brigadier General Gideon Avidor (retired) will examine the IDF's experiences in four key conflicts: first, the fight to take Jerusalem in the Six Day War of 1967; second, the battle for Suez City during the Yom Kippur War of 1973; third, combat in and around Beirut in 1982; and four, urban operations in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead in 2008 - 09.

Brigadier General Gideon Avidor left the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in 1999 after 42 years, including active service in the Six-Day War of 1967, the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and the Lebanon War of 1982. Between 1983 and 1986 he served as the Israeli Ministry of Defense and IDF Defense Adviser to Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. A graduate of Tel Aviv and Haifa Universities, as well as the US Army Command and General Staff College, and the Israeli National Defence College, he founded the Institute for Land Warfare Studies in Israel in 2007. He managed that organisation before founding the think-tank, the Institute for Advanced Military Thinking, in 2011.
